Increasing numbers of tourists are using digital cameras to take photos during their holidays.

Two digital cameras are shown with their specitications.

  • Define the terms pixel , mega byte and data compression
Pixel- Pixels are small squares, each of them stores a part of the image(including colours and shapes) and when all pixels are together they form a certain image. They are units for image processing andare used when pictures are displayed and stored.
Megabyte (MB) - It is a measurement/unit used to state the weight of a file or to express memory capacity. it is formed by 10000 bytes
Data compression- it is the process by which files are converted into a different format, or are "shrunk" to reduce their size/amount of space used and be transfered faster. In terms of images you can have either a lossy compression or a lossless one.

  • Describe three ways that tourists on holiday can share digital photos with their family at home.

By downloading them into a computer and later posting them on a social network.
Saving the files on their computers and then sending them by e-mail.
Send the image as a message via cellphone.
Downloading the images to their computer, accessing their messenger accounts, and send the photos through it.

  • Explain three benefits of saving digital photos in the jpg format.

JPEG format, even though it may have a bit less quality than a high resolution image, it uses a lot less memory space than other formats, so you can have more jpg pictures in the same computer than in other format.

Also, as it uses less memory, therefore pictures under this format weigh less and take less time to open than a high resolution image on a BMP format, and also take less time to download/upload

This format also is more versatile and can be copied easily to a USB or CD drive.

  • Unlike traditional photos, digital photos are easily stored and distributed. Evaluate the concerns that may arise from these developments.

The concerns that may arise from these are that first they can be easily uploaded/downloaded to/from websites such as social networks, which in the case of a amateur photographer means no good because they can be seen by other people who may not have good intentions, and this can lead to potential intellectual property issues. In most cases this happens when you don't have a way to protect your pictures such as copyright or a CCL and another company could use your image and eventually would use it for their own benefit and could get money out of it.
Secondly as they are easily stored, instead of having 100 high quality BMP pictures that weigh a lot more, you can have 1000 in JPEG, which may represent a risk regarding reliability and security issues. That is, if you have 2000 pictures of you and your friends/family and suddenly something goes wrong with your computer you may lose them all, and if we add onto that the risk that someone with bad intentions sneaks into your computer and gets access to them this can turn in to a risk for you and all those people that appeared on the photos, becoming a security issue.
Thirdly, as images can now be easily modified with computer programs (e.g. photoshop, GIMP, iphoto) the original photo can be easily altered and the content of the image may be fake. Also the quality of the image may vary from one computer to another depending on the pixels that each display has. Both which may represent an issue regarding reliability and integrity.
Finally, another thing that could happen is related to the reliability of the social network that has been used, because if you upload your photos there and suddenly the company is hacked, your photos may end up in wrong hands and could damage your integrity depending on the photos you had.
